When Will The World Stop Turning A Blind Eye To Celebrity Mental Illnesses??
The supermodel lifestyle is surely enviable and coveted by any walking female over the age of twelve. This super fancy job and everything related to it from drool-worthy wardrobes, entry to the most exclusive parties and such…continuous travelling and fancy hotels… you name it and they can do it ….but at what cost? When a young and beautiful nineteen-year-old model is exposed to all that and yet has to be disciplined enough and meet excruciating deadlines, in addition to spending countless hours in airplanes and strange hotel rooms…well ….it is then that they start seeing the darker side of this coveted life! Depression and mental illnesses have plagued and taken the lives of many celebrities but nothing real seems to have been done about it… Gisele and Kendall are the latest celebrities to actually discuss this publicly in their efforts to heal themselves….
Some models have recently starting admitting and discussed how their careers have caused them to suffer mental health issues and how they chose to deal with these issues. Gisele Bündchen is the latest celebrity to publicly admit that her anxieties got to a point that she had contemplated suicide! Despite having a picture-perfect life but the pressures of being a supermodel who lived in the public eye for quite some time took its toll on Gisele in ways nobody was able to see. In her new memoir, Lessons: My Path to a Meaningful Life, Gisele discusses how success was in fact the root cause of most of her anxieties. At the height of her career, Gisele started getting phobias from everything and was convinced that she was going to get killed somehow,…either in an airplane, or an elevator..then she developed irrational fears of tunnels, hotels, modelling studios, and cars. It got to a point that she became claustrophobic inside her own apartment, and that’s when she started entertaining thoughts of death to get out of this once and for all!
Kendall Jenner is another supermodel who is fighting her own demons! Having come from the most popular family on TV, Kendall should have been used to being in the public eye by now but it seems not. By choosing to model professionally Kendall wanted to break free of the stereotype stamped on her by her family and she wanted to carve another path for herself. After a few successful years on almost every worthwhile runway, Kendall was visibly absent this year. She skipped New York Fashion Week completely, and had an exclusive appearance at Riccardo Tisci’s debut show for Burberry during London Fashion Week and a few other appearances during Milan and Paris Fashion Weeks.
On being part of one of the world’s most popular families, she commented the following:
“I wouldn’t change it for the world but there are days where I wish I could walk outside and nothing would be like it is right now.”
Her anxieties were first revealed on one of the episodes of Keeping Up With The Kardashians; where Kris explains that Kendall is having a panic attack, and goes on to explain that she gets so overwhelmed during fashion weeks with all the travelling and the preparations. The 22-year-old model will go more into details during today’s episode; she admits to feeling faint as if she was going to pass out yet on the outside she would look fine. Jenner has learned to unwind by practicing Transcendental Meditation and doing some Netflix binge sessions before bed. However, retreating from technology seems to have worked best for her; she has turned her chat groups on mute and refrains from reading any comments on her social media posts.
Gisele wishes she can go back in time to tell her 23-year-old self that everything will be alright! Writing her memoir seems to be part of her lifelong recovery plan. She has since consulted with doctors and changed several of her disruptive habits such as quitting smoking and cutting back on alcohol and caffeine.
Discussing the darker side of fame was something of a taboo, as if, celebrities who have it all are denied the fact that they’re human beings at the end of the day with real struggles and life issues. The tragic deaths of Kate Spade and celebrity chef Anthony Bourdin in June of this year came within a week of each other to shock the world into taking a serious stance. Demi Lovato, has been battling addiction, mental illnesses and eating disorders for years, and after celebrating six years of sobriety earlier this year, Demi collapsed, relapsed and almost lost her life to an overdose this July. Isn’t it high time that the world stopped turning a blind eye and seriously addressed this issue???
