It all started innocently enough with Alexander Wang leaving Balenciaga to focus on his own brand. Enter Demna Gvasalia designer of independent fashion brand Vetements to take Wang’s place at Balenciaga. In the past year the attitude of Vetements has taken over Balenciaga and trickled down to high street fashion and shot up to equally affect couture. So, technically speaking what is the Vetements Effect ?
What is the Vetements Effect?
The Vetements effect is a new style of urban street wear. The major difference between traditional street wear and the Vetements urban street wear, is that with Vetements you are taking familiar basic items that make up our daily lives and glamorizing them. Traditional street wear actually does just the opposite it takes good clothes and destroys them. Vestments lifts everyday clothing to a glamorous level.
What are the Vetements Pants?
The most familiar trademark is of course the two tone denim, some have darker patches around the backside, others down the sides. There is also the denim frayed edge cut offs, shorter in the front, longer in the back. The ‘Adidas’ style three stripe wide leg gym pant which we now see on the streets worn with heels.
What are the Vetements Tops?
Oversized sweatshirts and shirts, in addition to basic bomber and denim jackets in ultra modern shapes.
What are the Vetements Shoes?
Well, given the above…it makes sense to think of the items that we love most and glamorize them. First of course, socks and how better to do so that by adding a metallic heel. More recently Balenciaga has taken it a step further by giving our much loved bedroom slippers an overhaul.
