The Six Arab Designers Of Paris Haute Couture
Arab designs have graced the red carpets for many years now, Elie Saab and Zuhair Murad are staples at international events, dressing the likes of Jennifer Lopez and Angelina Jolie. The world of couture is a prestigious one with rules and regulations established by the French government, and to make an evening dress does not guarantee one's entry into the Fédération Française de La Couture.
These six Arab designers have not only dressed celebrities, they have been inducted into the Fédération either as permanent or guests members. To put things into perspective, dress designers that have not been inducted into this prestigious institution include Marchesa, Gucci, J. Mendel and Oscar de la Renta to name a few.
Elie Saab - Permanent Member
This Lebanese native, Elie Saab has paved the way for other Arab designers, his ambition and vision have been instrumental in shaping Arab fashion internationally. He is the first Arab to be inducted after Tunisian born Azzedine Alaia.
Bouchra Jarrar - Permanent Member
This Moroccan native has made Paris her home. Working out of her small atelier her creations resonate with many. Known for her superb tailoring, Bouchra’s work is synonymous with Paris’ finest couture workmanship.
Zuhair Murad - Invited Member
Lebanese Zuhair Murad was invited by the Fédération, he has two years to prove that he is worthy of this invitation. We personally have no doubt that he will be inducted soon. Till then, he is considered a Couturier and not an Haute Couturier. His creations worn by a variety of A-listers, most recently the wedding dress of Modern Family’s Sofia Vergara. A grand achievement given the fact that his atelier is in Beirut and Sofia lives in LA.
