The Handmaid’s Tale Long-Awaited Sequel Is In The Works!
The fans of The Handmaid’s Tale were ecstatic to hear that their beloved story will finally have a sequel! Why did this come as a pleasant shock or at the least surprise? Because you probably did or did not know that The Handmaid’s Tale was written a while back… thirty three years ago to be precise!
Margaret Atwood wrote about a dystopian world in 1985 long before this topic became the in thing. She talked about a world that existed after a second American Civil War in which a patriarchal and totalitarian society subjugated women. The novel was adapted into a film, an opera, in addition to the award-winning television series which premiered in April 2017. The first season won eight Emmy Awards from thirteen nominations including Outstanding Drama Series. The series has now been renewed for a third season.
Margaret Atwood decided it’s high time she returned to the Republic of Gilead with the long-awaited sequel “The Testament”. The novel will be released in September of 2019, will be set 15 years after the events of The Handmaid’s Tale, and will be narrated by three female characters. This will probably put to rest the speculations about the destitute future that Atwood presented in her tales; in the same spirit it is probably worth noting that Handmaid costumes have become the uniforms of any anti-Trump rallies.
Upon it’s first release, The Handmaid’s Tale sold eight million copies, won and was nominated for a number of awards, and it topped the list of the best books of the 20th century. I personally haven’t had the chance to watch the series, but I sure am glad to have picked up a copy of the novel from an airport bookshop this summer. All the more reason to read it now before the sequel comes out!
