The Girlfriend’s Guide to Fall 2018 Handbags || Because the Runways Make No Sense

It would be fair to say that ‘sense’ is the last thing on the mind of a designer when creating a runway collection. They are looking for impact and creativity which leaves us handbag lovers in a bit of a conundrum. In our search for the perfect handbag purchase there is little or no help in defining what is trending. For obvious reasons e-commerce sites lack the credibility we are searching for. Add to that the exorbitant prices of handbags these days and we are left a little confused. CIIN breaks down the trends for you into a more user-friendly guide.

1 || Your Grandmother’s Purse

Vintage made a big impact on the runways this season, granny purses in exotic skins and timeless shapes in addition to seventies-inspired handbags as well.

What this all means :

If you have got a great family heirloom this is the time to take it out. Give it a little update with the way you ‘clutch it’. One of the strongest stories on the catwalks was the way bags were carried, you clutch it regardless of whether or not its a clutch. Another update is by clutching your long strap handbag like you would a short-strapped clutch…

2 || The Return of the Slouch

After a number of seasons of structure the slouchy bag has returned and for some of us, not a moment too soon. Soft, slouchy handbags in every shape and size. From the dependable shopper to clutches, these smooth-skinned, modern styles have been missed.

What this all means :

Although there were some ridiculously large and small slouchy bags on the runway, the genuine trend is in dependable medium-sized handbags. If you do choose to pull out an old one, you may be disappointed. This trend may resemble seasons past, but then their hardware is bright and shiny, the skin is soft and luxurious and the styles are playful. Unlike the last time we saw these bags when rugged and distressed were the buzz words.

3 || Just Clutch It

One of the strongest trends wasn’t actually a bag style but a style of carrying the bag instead. Regardless of size and formality the ‘clutch’ is the way to go. Just pinch your hand across the top of your handbag.

What this all means :

I for one have no intentions of clutching my daytime bag like a wet puppy. I will however adopt the carry your shoulder strap handbag in your hand on occasion (very different to clutching it….think Victoria Beckham). As for evening, this trend is more forgiving and quite cool. Pull out that timeless Chanel shoulder strap and give it a breath of life by clutching it.

4 || Old Money

There is just something about an Hermes-inspired structured bag that screams old money. Almost all brands now have a version of this bag, from Louis Vuitton to Burberry take your pick. This style comes in a variety of sizes, from minis on straps to larger sized daytime bags.

What this all means :

It means that you can thankfully pull out your terribly expensive structured handbag from seasons past, just take your thick embroidered or tri-colored shoulder strap off because old money doesnt mix and match. Embarrassed to tote around a bag that screams money? Take the edge off with a bright color or even some graffiti, as seen at Dolce & Gabbana.

5 || The Modified Flap Bag

The flap bag is changing, ever so slightly but you can see it. Its less angular, smaller and has both a top handle and a shoulder strap.

What this all means :

You will need to put away your Gucci Dionysus for a season or two, and perhaps pull out a handbag from two seasons ago. Part saddle bag, part flap bag, this hybrid can be carried as a clutch or using either of its straps.

6 || Logo Mania

Logos are everywhere this fall, including handbags. The graphics are inspired by the street, not luxury. You will find them in block letters and sometimes bubble letters. This is a punch at those stiff upper lipped women carrying their logo-ed collectibles. Logos this season are fun, vibrant and not too serious at all.

Dolce & Gabbana

Miu Miu

Chanel

What this all means :

This is a strong trend but not a serious one, so don’t take it too seriously. Invest in a medium range handbag if you are loving it. As for more expensive pieces you have been warned…

Christian Dior

Loewe

7 || Fur Real

It would be fair to assume that a fur handbag is at the very bottom of anyone’s list if at all. Well you wouldn’t have guessed it from the runways… Fur was everywhere, from shaggy roadkill at Prada to soft, plush furs at Fendi that remind us of bleating baby lambs… Not gonna happen…

Dolce & Gabbana

Balmain

Fendi
7
Prada

What this all means :

Fur on the runways means that texture is back, think velvet, flannel and some faux animal print. If you are loving the fur trend, buy yourself an extra shoulder strap (as seen at Fendi) or a handbag with some fur trimming.

8 || Embellishment

Embellishments have been around for a few seasons now, do you remember the emoji decked handbags at Anya Hindmarch. You may remember them more vividly if you shelled out an obscene amount of money to own one. This season embellishments are more artisanal and grown up.

Fendi

Balmain

Dolce & Gabbana

What this all means :

It means that you can get creative with your handbag if that’s what you like. Whether it’s colored rope, floral 3D embellishments or even studs, go for it.

9 || The Hobo

If you are a working woman or a mother of some young ones, then this is what really matters to you… The bag you will be toting all day everyday, and you won’t be disappointed. The hobo is back, its curved shape means it won’t get in the way, its softness means it will fit plenty and its attitude is relaxed so you don’t get more stressed…

Stella McCartney

What this all means :

Well firstly it means that you can finally be the boss of your own bag. The past few years of structured bags have meant that we needed to weight and consider the volume and shape of items placed in our bags.This season you can just throw everything in.

Speaking of throwing there are a few issues with hobos. If they are too soft and slouchy it will be a nightmare to find stuff in, and will have the attractiveness of a Carrefour plastic bag. Secondly, check out the color of the lining. If the bag is too deep and the lining is too dark it may feel like you are at the movies every time you look for something. Thirdly, do yourself a favor and find one with at least one pocket, where you can place your cell phone…

Balmain

Loewe

10 || Silly Stuff

There was some silliness on the runways and we are not sure why… Ultimately if the bag doesn’t fit your 5.5” phone it is not a bag… Perhaps the only takeaway from this trend is the fact that people love to be playful. A quick look at the styles above and you realize that it’s all a bit serious, do not hesitate to have a little fun with your handbag…
