The Establishment of the Alaïa Foundation and First London Store

Maison Alaïa announced in Paris the formation of the Fondation Alaïa at 18 Rue de la Verrerie. The foundation will be located at the same place that the designer had worked and lived, and where his exhibition and shop are also located. This new foundation can be considered an extension of the association that was founded in 2007 by the designer himself and his partner Christoph von Weyhe, and his longtime friend Carla Sozzani.

The exhibition called “Azzedine Alaïa: Je Suis Couturier” will be curated by Olivier Saillard, and will be launched in January at the late designer’s headquarters which will showcase Alaïa’s “heritage, style, icons, and savoir-faire”. Saillard explains that this exhibition is more of a homage to the late designer, who was deeply admired by everyone in the industry, and especially Saillard who feels deeply about this project and considers it an honour and a huge responsibility. “Azzedine did the work. Now it’s up to us to build his memory.” Saillard explains.

Approximately half of the pieces in the exhibition will be from the designer’s iconic evening wear pieces, while the other half will display pieces for the designer that will be revealed for the first ever.In the spring, the exhibition will be presented at the London Design Museum, to coincide with the momentous inauguration of the house’s first London flagship store on 139 New Bond Street.

The foundation will be a safe house for all the treasures that were created by Alaïa during his lifetime. It will be managed and looked after by all the loyal talents that constituted the Alaïa family for the past 30 years. The foundation will also collaborate with cultural institutions to display its collections and moreover, it will provide grants and donations to “young fashion visionaries” thus continuing the Alaïa vision and legacy.
