The Blue Light Effect And How To Prevent It From Damaging Your Skin

Technology is intended to make our lives easier, but it can have side effects on the skin. After mobile devices have brought us the “tech neck”; which are the horizontal folds across the neck from looking down at our phones, and laptop computers created “toasted skin syndrome”; which is a burning reaction that results in discoloration of the skin from the heat of a computer resting on the thighs, blue light has emerged with an additional damage causing effects that will threaten your skin as well..

Recently, certain skincare ingredients are being used with a sole purpose in mind, targeting “digital aging.” Whether or not you are familiar with this term, digital aging is becoming the number one factor that causes skin damage caused by a high energy visible light (known as blue light) from our phones and computer screens and LED lights. This blue light is penetrating deep into the skin, making the skin age faster.

Don’t panic yet, by using certain skincare ingredients you can effectively prevent this blue light from its damaging effects.. Remember, you can never feel it ruining your skin, that’s the scary part..

But how does blue light affect our skin? This high-energy visible light (HEV), refers to light wavelengths between 390 and 500 nm that get emitted from phones, computer screens and LED lights. Blue light penetrates farther into the skin than both UVA and UVB sunlight and uses a higher level of energy than IR (infrared) light. The end results might sound scary, blue light induces oxidative stress, damages proteins and lipids, contributing in photo-aging and excessive pigmentation.. It also causes premature aging of the eyes..

Antioxidants in skincare products are known to play a vital role in reversing the blue light damaging effects, a variety of antioxidants are needed in your skincare products. These should complement each other’s actions to ensure that as many free radical families as possible are neutralized.

To name a few; pomegranate, mangosteen, white, green and black teas, vitamins C, B3 and A, resveratrol, coenzyme Q10, sea buckthorn amongst others.. When used both mornings and nights in our skincare routine, you will prevent free radicals from forming and protect your skin from aging.. Using a screen protector also helps ban some blue rays from emitting in concentrated forms.
