Nail Polish Alert || The Toxic Trio You Should Steer Away From

From regular nail polish, French manicures to nail polish trends, we are always surrounded by the vast array of all things nails! Little did we know that ‘nailing’ it has a hefty price to pay.. As we increasingly visit nail spas for regular manicures, we should be warned by the chemicals in nail care products that contain toxic chemicals which can cause serious affect on our health. Which brings us to the most worrying of all nail polish ingredients; the toxic trio..

1 || Formaldehyde

Formaldehyde is a chemical used to harden and strengthen nail polishes, also serving as a preservative that protects against bacterial growth. Exposure to larger doses of formaldehyde in the air or on the skin may cause cancer of the throat, nose, and blood.

Nail salon workers and their children are especially at risk for chronic health problems caused by formaldehyde, including asthma, convulsions, nausea, and miscarriages. Repeated exposure can cause a build-up of fluid in the lungs and cause abnormal fetal development in pregnant women.

You know the issue is serious when The European Union allows only limited use of formaldehyde in personal care products, while Japan and Sweden have banned it completely.

2 || Toluene

Another potentially hazardous ingredient has serious health impacts. Commonly used as a solvent that creates a smooth finish across the nail and keeps the pigment or the colour from separating in the bottle. Unfortunately, toluene can affect the central nervous system and cause reproductive harm. The fact that its major use is as an additive in gasoline is quite a scare.

3 || Dibutyl Phthalate

Just by trying to pronounce it out loud is alarming to us! Dibutyl Pthalate is usually added to polishes to provide flexibility and has been linked to reproductive problems.

The problem with the above toxic trio does not end once your nail polish dries up! Those chemicals evaporate constantly, meaning we are continuously exposed to their effects..

What To Do?

Relax we are not going to take away that luxurious pampering experience from you, but as we are becoming more aware of clean beauty, we gathered up some non-toxic nail polishes out there that are 3-free, meaning they don't use toluene, dibutyl phthalate (DBP) or formaldehyde. Look forward to your next manicure, it can be headache- and toxin-free..
