Lessons Learned || What Meghan Did Wrong At Sandringham

It would be fair to say that more than a few of us were disappointed with Meghan Markle’s look yesterday on her way to Sandringham to celebrate a highly publicized first Christmas with the Queen. The operative words here being, ‘celebrate’, ‘Christmas’,’Queen’ and ‘highly publicized’. So pretty much the whole sentence.

Meghan’s attempt at a Ralph Lauren look fell flat on its face, possibly because it wasn’t Ralph Lauren…The interesting thing is that the coat, by Canadian luxury brand Sentaler cost a little under a thousand pounds. Not that she paid for it, so perhaps the real deal would have worked better.

So let's start with the look itself… First operative word 'festive.'

Meghan’s outfit was dull to say the least, beige and brown do not make a celebratory statement. If she really loves beige fine, but perhaps add some cherry red to the mix. This modern color combination of beige and red could have possibly saved the look. Heck, you know what, we are willing to settle for just a swipe of red lipstick…

As for the word,’Christmas’ it usually signifies dressing up. It’s a great time to have a little fun with a look.We aren’t exactly fond of British royalty’s current fashion statements but they were dressed 'up' appropriately.Christmas in particular encourages us to veer a little away from the usual.

Next, the Q word, Queen…As mentioned a few days ago, the rules were broken for Meghan (again). She is the first non-family / non-spouse to be invited to the Christmas at Sandringham.A great reason to pull out all the stops, outfit-wise.It would be fair to say that her attempt at casual chic was not a good one. So how do you define ‘formal’ anyway?Formal is defined by cut and fabric and style… Her wrap coat, in a daytime fabric with suede boots and handbag don’t check those boxes.

As for the last operative word, ‘highly publicized’ this immediately triggers the term camera-friendly.How well does your outfit photograph?Wrap coats do not photograph well, they are never tidy enough to create a good silhouette. It actually occurred to us that perhaps she was wear an appropriate dress underneath the coat, but she must have known that she would be photographed in the coat…

Another thing we need to mention... We must always consider what things ‘look’ like in photos. We are sure that Meghan’s hat looked ‘cute’ in real life. In the photo it looks a lot like the poop emoji … Seriously!
