Daniel Day-Lewis Retires After ‘Phantom Thread’!
To think that ‘Phantom Thread’ will be the last ever movie to star Daniel Day-Lewis may be difficult to comprehend but it seems that multi-award winning star has his reasons to quit acting …. which are quite incomprehensible!!
Daniel Day-Lewis revealed that he did not plan on quitting acting when he first started working on the ‘Phantom Thread’. In fact, it has seemed to him quite a fun yet challenging role; where he plays a young couturier in 1950’s London who falls in love with a waitress and struggles to overcome the differences between them both.
To prep for the role, the three-time Oscar winner had to apprentice under the costume department head at the New York City Ballet and actually sewed a Balenciaga dress. But the perplexing thing is that what started out as a fun project where Day-Lewis and Thomas Anderson would laugh a lot turned into overwhelming sadness during the making of the movie. “We were both overwhelmed by a sense of sadness. That took us by surprise: We didn’t realise what we had given birth to. It was hard to live with. And still is.” Day-Lewis explained.
Day-Lewis doesn’t intend to see the finished film as well, and it is connected to his decision to quit. “I need to believe in the value of what I’m doing. The work can seem vital. And if the audience believes it, that should be good enough for me. But, lately, it isn’t.”
Some believe that he’ll return to acting someday especially since Day-Lewis himself admitted to feeling like quitting after every role he did, however, he unfortunately announced it this time to draw a line and not to get tempted by another role again.
