Beyoncé vs. Rihanna || Two Mega Stars & Two Explosive Vogue Covers

It seems that the much-anticipated US Vogue’s September cover has created an incredible amount of hype and to good reason for that. Not only has the Beyoncé-fronted cover re-ignited the rumours surrounding the impending departure of Anna Wintour or lack thereof, but it was seen as a remake of Rihanna’s UK Vogue’s cover that was released a week ago. So is it a matter of great minds thinking alike or has the fashion scene lost its momentum and become quite predictable… how do the covers of these two mega-influential magazines compare and does the success of these covers depend on creativity or on the star power of the women gracing these pages?

Let’s for a moment ignore the fact that both magazines opted for two of the biggest names in the music industry right now and let’s concentrate on the covers which BOTH showcase Beyoncé and Rihanna heavily bedecked in flowery crowns much like a real-life remake of the uber-popular filter that was made famous by Snapchat. US Vogue has always taken the lead in terms of creativity and setting precedents but truth be told, Edward Enninful; UK Vogue’s editor-in chief since April 2017 has proven that the Brits have still got it! Having directed the photoshoot himself, UK Vogue’s cover has sparked comments what with Rihanna’s new pencil-thin drawn eyebrows, a clear reminiscent of the 90’s.

US Vogue’s cover unleashed the rumours surrounding the supposed departure of Wintour since it seems that Beyoncé was given a free reign in the directing of the photoshoot which is not something that Wintour usually approves of. Beyoncé is also claimed to have had her say in the editorial work as well as in the choice of staff, namely the photographer chosen this time. 23 year old up-and-coming photographer Tyler Mitchell is the first ever black photographer to shoot a cover for Vogue in its 126 years of existence. Though many believe that Beyoncé’s influence transcended that of Wintour’s and that it was she who decided on the photographer but the magazine claim that they wanted some change given the recent sexual harassment allegations following its leading photographers. Mitchell chose a muted white background to offset Beyoncé’s regalia in what seems like a departure from the magazine’s usually outdoor settings or indoor extravagant ones. However, in my opinion, the wrinkled white sheet in the background did not do the shoot any favours.

Rihanna’s cover, on the other hand, which is also my personal favourite amongst the two, came off as a multi-dimentional extravaganza with its clever wavering between the glamorous and the naturalistic! The exquisite cover was full of updated nostalgic references; eyebrows, neon, and gloves; and whereas Beyoncé’s cover was as flat as an ironing board, Rihanna’s on the other hand would’ve sparkled even if it wasn’t Bad Gal Riri herself on the cover! Regardless of what I feel about these two, and in spite of not having bough a magazine in ages thanks to Instagram; but I can’t wait to get my hands on these two issues ….I have a feeling they will become quite iconic!!
