Alberta Ferretti x Alitalia || A Tale of High-Flying Elegance
Alberta Ferretti just unveiled her new capsule collection for the Italian Airlines; Alitalia. Moving away from their signature red and green suits; Alitalia knew where to go to have their uniforms revamped and redesigned into sleek navy blue suits, pencil skirts and jackets. Opting for a breathable fabric that can withstand 30,000 feet, the new design is accented with tricolor ribbons as a tribute to the Italian flag.
“I wanted sober lines and for Italian elegance to travel around the world.” Ferreti explained.
This won’t be the first time that a high-end designer takes over the role of high-flying fashion so to speak. Delta Airlines looked to Zac Posen for help, while Virgin Atlantic sought out Vivienne Westwood. This could possibly be the airlines’ attempts at maintaining a measure of luxury at a time where travelling has witnessed various cuts and compromises. Legroom has become narrower and mediocre sandwiches have replaced warm meals.
The elegant navy blue suits are also accented with details that bring out that extra touch of couture elegance such as gold buttons, bright red ties, and feminine silk scarves. In a video released last month, Ferrretti was shown hand stitching the uniforms herself whether to prove that there was an immaculate attention to detail or to justify the steep price tag… we wouldn’t know but this comes at a time where Alitalia is operating at a loss and is having a hard time keeping up with lower-cost European airlines. Nevertheless, it is clear that these uniforms were designed with elegance and comfort in mind, as it seems the previous uniforms were uncomfortable and impractical and numerous requests for change were reported.
Should you be traveling to or around Italy anytime soon keep an eye out on the new uniforms as they are expected to launch in September. And I expect you will most likely be enamoured with the minimalist leather satchel that Ferretti designed for the flight attendants as a carry-on purse.
