A Watch That Made History || The Gucci Timepiece!
One of the most favourite words in the English language …or rather Italian ….must be Gucci! All the fashion-forward people must have some form of Gucci item carried, worn, or draped around. Guccio Gucci founded the House of Gucci in 1906, the house’s luxury products were sold on the market in the1920s, and the first boutique was opened in Rome in 1938. In 1953 Gucci landed in New York and by the end of the 1960s Gucci had opened stores in most prominent world capitals. However, by the end of the 1970s the company was on the verge of bankruptcy due to a number of poor business decisions and it was Gucci’s watch collection that came to the rescue! Gucci watches are not merely fashion staples; they are extraordinary timepieces that helped save a brand!
Gucci first debuted its luxury watches in 1972 and they were only sold in Italy at the beginning. This ultra-exclusivity made these watches a hard-to-source product and thus their popularity soared. Demand tri-folded in Europe and in the USA; one of their earliest creations was a bangle watch with interchangeable dials in a variety of colors and this was to be sold out globally. The watch’s turnover went from $3 million during their first year to $70 million only three years later to $115 million in 1988!
Hopping to the 1990’s, it was the Gucci watch that helped the brand regain some of its lost glory. In the year 2000 Gucci were set to take control of the watch market when they acquired Boucheron International Group thus establishing themselves as one of the major influencers in the market of luxury watches. What sets these watches apart from other luxury watches is the fact that these watches are priced well below other known watch brands yet retain the same luxury, design, and functionality.
