A New Decade A New Attitude At Ashi Studio

It’s been ten years since Mohammed Ashi launched his eponymous label Ashi Studio in a little apartment in Beirut. Today, he stands tall as one of the great couturiers of the Arab world and beyond. His Spring ready-to-wear 2018 collection showcased in Abu Dhabi in an opulent event to mark his 10th anniversary saw 250 Thai guests in attendance, a clear indicator of his international reach.

As the models sashayed down the runway we saw Mohammed Ashi usher in a new decade and a new attitude. The poetic sculptural masterpieces that launched his name no longer define the designer’s aesthetic. In an unpredictable political climate the demand for couture is waning in addition to that, women are becoming more practical, in search of pieces that can be better utilized.

What has also changed unfortunately is his city, the brand has been relocating to Italy this past year. Siting a lack of unnecessary expertise, this latest collection was made entirely in Italy.

The Spring 2018 collection merged both worlds, the precision and luxury of couture with the pragmatism of daywear. The first look, a fitted bustier matched to a full length pleated skirt and matching duster coat in a sublime shade of creme was almost an x-ray of his future vision, sophisticated design in wearable silhouettes.

His new-found pragmatism was also evident in the bright shades of color. Ashi, best know for his monochrome palette infused his latest collection with fuchsia and puce green to the joy of his audience. As softer shapes and brighter colors came down the catwalk we were reminded that in order to grow one most re-assess, re-explore and ultimately have the flexibility to change.
