Nothing pleases us more that watching someone else do what we have always wanted to do. Those aspiring football and tennis players glued to the TV, watching Wimbledon and the World Cup, as if their lives depended on it.
It inspires us, allows us to live in our fantasy world for a little while, and subconsciously gets our mind thinking about the what ifs… Let's get our fashion juices flowing this weekend with these memorable documentaries.
#1 Iris Apfel Documentary - 2015
When Iris Apfel was a young woman from Queens, New York, starting out in the fashion industry, Frieda Loehmann, founder of the famed department store, took her aside: “She said, 'You're not pretty and you'll never be pretty, but it doesn't matter. You have something much better. You have style.' "
This “rare bird of fashion," as she is now known, first came to prominence in the 1950s, and has continued to break the rules of fashion till this day.
In Iris, we see Apfel mingle with Bruce Weber, Jenna Lyons, and Kanye West, while behind the closed doors of her Park Avenue apartment she quietly grapples with old age. Fashion, she says, never keeps her up at night. “Matters of health and things like that [do]. Things that are really important."
#2 The Artist is Absent - 2015
Recluse, annonymous, vision, legacy. All words used time and time again to describe Martin Margeila and his contribution to fashion. Famously absent from the limelight, Margeila refused to highlight anything but the garments. This homage to Margeila brought to us by Yoox online fashion retailer, sheds some much needed light on this fashion phenomenon.
#3 Fresh Dressed - 2015
This documentary film chronicles the history of hip hop fashion. Featuring such prominent personalities as Kanye West, Pharrell Williams and Swizz Beats. This is a must see for anyone interested in the evolution of hip hop fashion from the streets of Harlem to the catwalks of Paris.
#4 Saint Laurent - 2015
This is the second of two documentaries on the legendary Yves Saint Laurent, and his trials and tribulations in the world of fashion. A film that will tug at your heart strings. Yves Saint Laurent, this delicate, creative soul and his love/hate relationship with the fashion industry.
#5 Dior and I - 2015
After you watch this documentary you will realize how painful it must have been for Raf Simons to film the documentary in the first place. Famous for his modern pret-a-porter collections, it was surprising when Raf was appointed head of the Dior fashion house and it's substantial couture service. This film chronicles the Dior house from the start with Mr. Dior, an enlightening journey on the process of couture.
